| The Black Rock Desert
and its "playa" or dry lake.
It is located 100+
miles north of Reno and is surrounded with
good rockhounding sites. Agates, fossils,
geodes, jasper, opal and petrified wood
can be found in the mountains and
canyons.
|
It's namesake, Black
Rock Point can be seen in the distance. It
is the dividing point between the
northwest playa and the northeast playa.
It is located about 25 miles north of
Gerlach. Gerlach is at the extreme south
end of the main playa. The world land
speed record was achieved on the main
playa in 1997.

Our usual campsite. It
is located on the west side of the playa
off the Soldier Meadows road.

In the
bottom right corner of this photo is seen
some blue agate just before it was picked
up off the desert floor.

Double Hot Springs is
located several miles north of the "Black
Rock." It is a good place to meet but much
too hot for swimming. Stay well back from
the edges of this scalding
spring.

Fishing
goes well with rockhounding.
