Welcome to Reno Gem and Mineral Society

Reno gem and mineral society bar

Field trips are for the purpose of
collecting gem, mineral and fossil materials
for displaying or jewelry making. RGMS members take many field trips during the year. Monthly one-day trips are scheduled from March through October. Three-day trips are usually scheduled on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day weekends.

The Black Rock Desert and its "playa" or dry lake.

It is located 100+ miles north of Reno and is surrounded with good rockhounding sites. Agates, fossils, geodes, jasper, opal and petrified wood can be found in the mountains and canyons.

It's namesake, Black Rock Point can be seen in the distance. It is the dividing point between the northwest playa and the northeast playa. It is located about 25 miles north of Gerlach. Gerlach is at the extreme south end of the main playa. The world land speed record was achieved on the main playa in 1997.

Heading out onto the playa.

Our usual campsite. It is located on the west side of the playa off the Soldier Meadows road.

In the bottom right corner of this photo is seen some blue agate just before it was picked up off the desert floor.

Close-up of the agate which was about 2" across.

A couple of rockhounds about to head out to a mine ruin.

Double Hot Springs is located several miles north of the "Black Rock." It is a good place to meet but much too hot for swimming. Stay well back from the edges of this scalding spring.

Fishing goes well with rockhounding.

Young rockhound at
"The Sump" in west central Nevada. Boundary Peak, the highest point in Nevada is in the background.

Chiseling and shoveling to break out the rose quartz.

One of our more interesting sites.

Remember the "cooky" on the wagon trains?

Members and visitors gather together for a Saturday evening potluck.
