About Us

The Reno Gem and Mineral Society, Inc.

480 S. Rock Blvd. Sparks, NV 89431

The Reno Gem & Mineral Society (RGMS) is a 501(C)(3) non-profit corporation, organized for the purpose of creating, developing, and encouraging interest in earth sciences, as well as gem and mineral hobbies.

The RGMS General Membership Meeting is held on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the meeting room on the 2nd floor of Baldini’s Casino on Rock Blvd. and Glendale Ave. in Sparks, Nevada.

  • Meetings are open to the general public and, after a brief business portion, the educational program usually covers some aspect of the hobby or a related topic.
  • The RGMS is governed by, an annually elected, volunteer team of officers and board members, who oversee all Society activities.
  • These include classes and workshops in lapidary, silver fabrication, casting, carving, beading, wire wrap jewelry, and more. Day long or overnight camping field trips are scheduled once a month, except in the winter, to learn the location and identification of various rock, gem and mineral materials. Several social events are also held, including an annual picnic, Christmas party, potlucks, used equipment sales and craft fairs.

The Jackpot of Gems is the Society’s annual show and primary fund raising activity. RGMS members are encouraged to exhibit the materials they have made or collected. The Society is a member of the California Federation of Mineralogy Society and, as such, exhibitors are encouraged to enter their displays in competition under CFMS rules. Jewelry, polished and faceted stones, tools and minerals are also for sale by dealers.

RGMS History

In the 1950’s there were two gem and mineral societies in the Reno area, the Washoe Gem and Mineral Society and the Pyramid Gem and Mineral Society. The mid 1960’s saw the two societies merge and become the Reno Gem and Mineral Society, Incorporated. Initially the Society held their meetings, classes and social events in members’ homes and garages. Then in 1976 the Society rented the space at 480 S. Rock Blvd., Sparks, Nevada. Nonprofit status was granted by the IRS in 1984 under code 501 (c)(7); this was changed in March 2012 to code 501 (c)(3), and the RGMS was classified as a public charity. Most recently, after years of dreaming, planning and hard work, on October 18, 2017, the RGMS became the owner of the 19,320 sq. ft. building that housed the space rented by the Society for over 30 years! Once the building is fully restored and leased, RGMS will begin to remodel the existing space plus another 2,500 sq. ft. (total of about 5,000 sq. ft.!) to create new, separate lapidary and metal fabrication shops as well as multiple classrooms and meeting rooms.

You are invited to come join us on this next exciting phase in the history of the Reno Gem and Mineral Society! See the Membership section of this website for further details.
